In July, OpenAI launched a beta version of its proprietary web search engine, SearchGPT. Now, this search functionality has become part of ChatGPT, the company’s AI-powered chatbot. OpenAI announced that paid ChatGPT subscribers can try the new search feature starting this week, with free users, enterprises, and educational institutions expected to gain access in the coming weeks.
OpenAI’s approach does not involve releasing SearchGPT as a standalone tool. Instead, the web search capability is fully integrated within ChatGPT itself. The algorithm can automatically detect when web search is appropriate based on the user’s query, though users can also manually activate it if desired. By embedding web search, OpenAI aims to bridge a competitive gap between ChatGPT and other market players like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini, both of which already offer built-in web access. Following the announcement, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) saw a minor share decline of about 1%.
Real-Time Updates and Source Integration
OpenAI’s integrated ChatGPT search offers real-time access to a range of information, such as sports scores, stock prices, and weather conditions. During a recent demonstration, an OpenAI representative highlighted how users could track Apple stock prices in real-time, with relevant news updates readily available. The feature also ensures transparency by providing links to original sources for each piece of information shared. NIX Solutions adds that ChatGPT includes a sidebar with brief descriptions of the articles, making it easier to browse sources quickly.
Available Across Multiple Platforms
This new web search capability is accessible on all platforms where ChatGPT operates, including Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. According to OpenAI, the search function was developed through a mix of proprietary search technologies and integration with Microsoft Bing. Initially, OpenAI released the feature to 10,000 test users; now, it is rolling out to the broader ChatGPT user base. We’ll keep you updated as the feature reaches additional users and continues to evolve.
