Mozilla is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Firefox by releasing Firefox 132, packed with notable features and enhanced security. Among the key updates is the full blocking of third-party cookies, designed to strengthen user privacy. Additionally, users can now enjoy 4K video support on select streaming platforms, bringing a higher quality experience to their screens.
This release addresses several vulnerabilities, improving the overall security of the browser. According to PCWorld, 11 vulnerabilities were fixed, including two critical ones: CVE-2024-10459, a use-after-free vulnerability that may lead to the execution of malicious code, and CVE-2024-10458, which could allow unauthorized authorization transfer from secure to insecure sites. These enhancements represent Mozilla’s continued commitment to user safety.
Improved Data Protection and 4K Support
Mozilla has enhanced data protection features in Firefox 132, especially for users who enable the “Strict” privacy setting (found under Firefox > Privacy and Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection). In this mode, all third-party cookies are fully blocked, and their storage period is limited to 400 days. Mozilla has also improved URL tracking protection; users can now remove tracking parameters like UTM tags by using the “Copy link without tracking” option.
The update includes 4K video support on major streaming platforms, relying on Microsoft PlayReady technology for encrypted playback and content protection. Currently, this feature is available only on select sites as it undergoes testing.
Updates to Firefox ESR, Tor Browser, and Thunderbird
In addition to Firefox 132, Mozilla has released updates to Firefox ESR, Tor Browser, and the Thunderbird email client. Firefox ESR 128.4.0 received 10 vulnerability patches, while the updated Tor Browser 14.0.1 incorporates the new security features from Firefox 132. Thunderbird, in version 128.4.0esr, received similar security updates, although it is only supported on newer operating systems.
For users who sync Firefox across multiple devices, Firefox 132 adds a new option to synchronize bookmarks, open tabs, and passwords. NIX Solutions adds that users can close tabs on other devices from a sidebar, though this function requires manual activation in Settings.
As we celebrate Firefox’s anniversary on November 9, 2024, Mozilla’s commitment to innovation and security is clear. The next update, Firefox 133, is scheduled for release on November 26, 2024. We’ll keep you updated on these and future enhancements to the browser.
