Google has updated its search results to include a clear indication when results are personalized. Users can now easily identify and turn off this feature, making it simpler to manage personalized search results compared to earlier implementations.
At the bottom of the Google search results page, a new marker indicates whether the results are personalized. If the results are not tailored to the user, the system displays the message: “Results are not personalized.” Otherwise, a link to view non-personalized results appears next to this notification. According to Google representative Ned Adriance, “This change helps people more clearly understand whether their results have been personalized, and also gives them the ability to explore non-personalized results. We’ve also made it easier for people to change their personalization settings at any time.” Previously, such information was displayed individually for each search result, which Google acknowledges was less accessible.
Non-Personalized Results: Easier Access
The option to view non-personalized results provides users with a temporary look at search outcomes that do not reflect their profile settings. Clicking on this link does not alter any account preferences permanently. Since at least 2007, users have had the ability to turn off search personalization by adding “&pws=0” to the search results URL. Alternatively, personalization settings can be fully adjusted in a user’s Google account settings, adds NIXSolutions.
This update aims to enhance clarity and accessibility for users seeking more control over their search experiences. While the feature has long existed, its improved visibility and usability mark a significant step forward. We’ll keep you updated on additional refinements or integrations as they become available.
