OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT called Deep Research, designed to conduct in-depth investigations based on user queries. This tool is built on OpenAI’s upcoming large language model, o3.
According to OpenAI, Deep Research can function autonomously by “planning and executing a multi-step search path for relevant data, backtracking, and responding to new information online where needed.” Unlike standard AI searches, this feature does not merely retrieve answers but analyzes and summarizes data from various sources to generate comprehensive reports.
Features and Limitations
As Deep Research operates, users will see a brief description of the process displayed on the right side of the screen, along with citations and other relevant information. The feature allows users to enter queries in text format and upload additional files, such as PDFs, spreadsheets, or images, to provide more context. Once the input is processed, the system requires between 5 and 30 minutes to generate a detailed report. Future updates may also include the ability to add images and diagrams to responses.
Despite its advanced capabilities, OpenAI acknowledges that Deep Research is not without flaws, adds NIXSolutions. The tool may hallucinate, generating incorrect or nonexistent facts, and struggles to differentiate between authoritative sources and unreliable information. However, OpenAI remains optimistic about its potential, stating that Deep Research can function at an analyst level.
Access and Pricing
The new feature will be available to users subscribed to OpenAI’s $200-per-month plan, allowing up to 100 Deep Research queries per month. Users on the $20-per-month plan will receive limited access.
